All about holidays in Cayo Guillermo. All about holidays in Cayo Guillermo The visiting card of the island or grandfather Hemingway's favorite island

  • Date: 14.11.2020

a small but very beautiful island called Cayo Guillermo. This small tropical retreat is part of the Jardines del Rey archipelago. The island is washed by a transparent sea, and on the shore lies white sand and the beaches seem endless. Pink flamingos live on Cayo Guillermo, and in large numbers. Getting here, many tourists lose touch with reality and familiar life.

The area of this picturesque island is only 13 sq. km. But on the other hand, there are three beaches where you can swim and enjoy the calm Caribbean Sea. The length of the beaches along the island is almost 5 km. And of course the most popular is the beach called Playa Pilar. This is the best beach not only in Cayo Guillermo, but in all of Cuba. And its name reminds us of Ernest Hemingway. That was the name of his favorite yacht, and the writer himself simply adored Cuba and visited here very often.

Cayo Guillermo is located at a distance of about 20 km from the island of Cayo Coco. Between them is a bulk dam that connects both islands.

Cayo Guillermo is known for its rich flora and fauna. You can see dolphins swimming right from the shore. A wide variety of birds live on the island. Birds can be found in palm groves and magroes. Since they occupy most of Cayo Guillermo, birds are found at almost every step.

All the island of Cayo Guiltermo is adapted for tourists. Therefore, there are no local residents here, except perhaps only service personnel in hotels. You will not be able to meet a Cuban from this island here, only visitors from other countries are vacationers. Nevertheless, even hotel workers are incredibly friendly and always smiling people. Cubans are famous throughout the world for their ability to enjoy everything that surrounds them and not complain about their problems.

The island is built up with hotels and is not fully equipped with beaches, and most of its area is simply empty. Therefore, after swimming in the clear sea, all vacationers can walk around the island and enjoy the beauty of mangroves with green leaves, listen to the silence, the singing of local birds. But such walks will bring more pleasure if you take them in the morning and closer to the night, when the weather is good. The day is intensely hot.

It is also worth being careful if any animals come across on the way during a short trip. There are very few of them on the island, so it is not recommended to disturb them and interfere with their usual way of life.

The island has sunny weather almost all year round. Therefore, the climate allows you to relax at any time of the year. But if you want to enjoy swimming in clear water, golden sand and local fauna, then it is better to come here in winter. At this time of the year there are many migratory birds.

How to get there?

Cayo Guillermo is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northern coast of Cuba. Airplanes are the only transport that brings tourists to the island. But all of them can only fly to the Jardines del Rey airport on the island of Cayo Coco. And after taking a ground transfer after arriving at the airport, you can get to Cayo Guilleromo through the bulk dam. It will not be possible to fly directly from Russia. You will need to make a transfer through one of the cities in Europe, Varadero or Havana.

You can also get to the island by yacht or boat. There are two berths that can accommodate up to 16 yachts. One of them is Marina Coco-Guillermo and the other is Marina Jucaro.

What to see and where to go on vacation in 2019?

Of course, the main attraction of this paradise are the local beaches. This is probably the only place worth going and seeing. And there is something to see. In addition, the dunes, whose height reaches 15 meters, will be interesting for vacationers.

In addition to a beach holiday on the island, you can also do various sports, including diving and snorkeling. Yacht trips are also regularly organized for vacationers.

Diving is popular here, not only because of the rich underwater world on the coast, but also because of the coral reef, which is located one kilometer from the coast. The reef at the bottom of the sea has incredible size and indescribable beauty. In terms of the number of species and the number of underwater inhabitants that live on the reef, it takes an honorable second place after the Great Barrier Reef.

You can find all the equipment and even learn how to properly dive under water in one of the sports centers. All of them are close to local resorts. In total, there are three centers on the island - Abalon, Action Sports and Coco Diving. After completing the training at the center, they can issue a certificate. For those who have been diving for a long time in the centers, you can use the services of diving under water during the day or at night.

Tourists can also visit the lagoon called Laguna de la Leche. The water here has an unusual milky color due to the content of bicarbonate in it, because of this the place got its name.

What to try?

Resting on Cayo Guillermo, you just need to see the mesmerizing show with sharks, which is held at the Abalon Sports Center.

Excursions

From excursions here you can choose trips to Moron, Triniada or Havana. An excursion to Moron will take only a few hours. But it will take about two days to go to Trinidad or Havana.

The sights closest to Cayo Guillermo can be seen on the island of Varadero. Here, tourists can walk around the only city built by French emigrants during the colonies. This is the city of Cienfuegos. Here, vacationers will be interested in the central square and the large palace, in which the local nobility once lived. The road to the next city of Trinidad will not be boring either. On the way you will come across fields and mountains, which are distinguished by their unusual beauty. Trinidad is also a very special city. Here, time has stood still and it seems that the conquistador era still reigns. Houses and streets have their own unique look. Each brick and window has its own story.

There is a memorial dedicated to Ernesto Che Guevara in Santa Clara. This is a local hero. If you wish, you can visit the museum where his things are located, as a reference. Also in the museum you can see photographs depicting the people's favorite. And of course, the museum curator will gladly tell you everything he knows about Ernesto's biography.

A small bonus for tourists is that the entire road from city to city passes on an American retro car. BUT sometimes a minivan changes it, which does not affect the quality of transportation.

Leisure entertainment

In Cayo Guillermo, kiting is still very popular. It was here, according to local residents, that the very first kite station was opened. Today, a station called KiteLandPark operates on the island. You can find it next to the Villa Cojimar. The center has everything you need for kiting, including equipment.

In addition, for tourists on the island there is everything you need to go diving or fishing. Between the islands of Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco there is a huge lake called Redonda Lagoon. It is an international center for trout breeding. This lake gathers a large number of fishermen near its waters.

Beaches

On Cayo Guillermo, all the beaches are adapted not only for adults, but also for children. You can go to El Paso, Del Medio or Larga Beach. Each of them is very comfortable and if we talk about safety, then everything is also observed.

You can enter the water gradually, the coast is quite gentle and there is no sharp transition between large and shallow depths near the beach. In addition, there are practically no big waves on the beaches.

But for those who want to retire from most vacationers, you can go to Playa Prohibida beach. The place is perfect for quiet romantic evenings. In this part of the island, quite large sand dunes can be found, sometimes reaching a height of 15 meters.

Night life

All night entertainment can be found on the territory of your hotel. As a rule, all of them often arrange various shows for their vacationers that fascinate and do not leave anyone indifferent. Well, in the daytime you can visit the fitness center, go shopping or go to a restaurant. All this is in every hotel on the island.

What to bring from vacation?

You can go shopping only where there are hotels nearby. And there you can buy rum, coffee, cigars, ceramics and many other souvenirs. And if you need to buy something else, then you can do it without any problems if you go to the city of Trinidad, for example, there are many shops there, which are usually located in close proximity to the main attractions.

Hotels

All local hotels operate only on an all-inclusive basis. But there are very few of them on the island. Therefore, you can choose a room either in the three-star Villa Cojimar hotel, in one of the four-star Sol Cayo or Guillermo Iberostar, or in the five-star Melia Cayo Guillermo.

All the food served in the hotels in Cayo Guillermo is of excellent quality. Great selection of food and always fresh food. Only local cuisine is on the menu.

All complexes where you can stay are located along the El Pasov beach area on the eastern part of the island. During the construction of each of them, it was important to preserve the local ecosystem so that the hotels do not damage the natural habitats of animals and birds.

The cost of living in hotels in Cuba starts at $ 105 per day per person. The average room price is $121. Well, one of the most expensive offers can be called accommodation per day for $ 132 per person.

Pilar beach

There are no hotels directly on this beach. I really hope that they will not appear here, as this can spoil the natural beauty of the beach. About 1 km east of Pilar beach is the Iberostar Playa Pilar hotel, and near the western end of the beach, a Centara hotel is being built on the cape.
On the Pilar beach itself there is a grill restaurant Playa Pilar, a beach club of the same name (chairs, sun loungers and umbrellas are offered), a water sports center of the same name.

Attractions and excursions in Cayo Guillermo

Initially, it may seem that the islands of Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco are God-forgotten places where there are no attractions and entertainment. But in fact, there are many interesting places and entertainment in this area.
Cayo Guillermo itself has several beautiful beaches, the most famous of which is Pilar Beach. Group excursions are even offered to this beach, and for a tourist bus and a mini-train, a stop near this beach is the final one.

Every hotel has an animation team that keeps guests entertained all day long. All sorts of foamy, beach parties are arranged in hotels, evening shows are held, live music sounds ... In general, it is not so easy to get bored even in a hotel.
Outside of the hotels on Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Coco, there is also plenty to do. Most of the entertainment is somehow connected with water, which is understandable, since we are talking about the islands. There is a Russian kitesurfing school on Cayo Coco.

Diving and snorkeling in Cayo Guillermo

The archipelago of Jardines del Rey is a ribbon of virtually untouched islands and islets that lie at a distance of 20 to 60 km from the "Cuban mainland". The reef stretches for about 400 km along the northern coast of Cuba. In fact, it starts at the island of Cayo Blanco near Varadero and ends at the island of Cayo Sabinal in the Sabana-Camagui archipelago. Part of the reef, belonging exclusively to the Jardines del Rey archipelago, has a length of about 200 km.
As it is the second largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Australia, it has always been a danger to ships, but at the same time it has always attracted divers and snorkelers. Since 1992, when the first hotel was built on Cayo Guillermo, divers from all over the world have rushed here. Shipwrecks, underwater caves and amazing marine life attract many divers here. The areas between the beach and the beginning of the reef are usually shallow waters, naturally protected by the reef wall from strong Atlantic waves. These waters are ideal for snorkelers exploring the coastal side of the reef and scuba divers diving off the deeper Atlantic side of the reef. The shallow waters are mostly inhabited by small fish and those species of fish that come here during the breeding season. The Atlantic side of the reef is usually inhabited by large fish and marine mammals such as whales and dolphins.
The reef serves as a protective fence not only for the beaches, but also for the bathers in the area, as it breaks the waves and acts as a natural breakwater, as well as keeping the big fish and predators out that can't get into the shallower coastal part of the reef. Big fish, sharks and manta rays that try to get into the shallower coastal waters are either riddled with fossilized corals or cut up by them. It is not uncommon to see small fish feeding on the dead carcasses of larger fish that have made the fatal mistake of trying to chase their prey.

Conclusion

Cayo Guillermo, of course, can be called an island paradise. Despite the fact that the number of hotels here is already approaching ten, the island still remains a clean, beautiful place.
