10th place. Skyrim: The Special Edition (39 km?).

We go with the trump cards! Probably, when it came to the open world, many immediately remembered Skyrim, but, as it turned out, the world of this game is not that great. The game has been around for many years, but, nevertheless, at one time its icy expanses caused delight. And even now, to put it mildly, they do not seem small. For example, the map of another game from Bethesda - Fallout 4 - has an area of ​​only 15 square kilometers, despite the difference in many years. True, it should be added that these same 39 km of Skyrim did not include dungeons. It seems difficult to calculate them, but if we added them, then, perhaps, the project would rise higher. Well, you also need to take into account that in this case we are talking about a Special Edition with all its additions.

9th place. Far Cry 4 (45 km?).

Ubisoft's love for open world games was immediate. A first-person shooter, and with such a world - it is, you know, worth a lot. Usually, if we say "first person shooter", we mean something corridor. But this is not the case. There is a large, seamless, multi-level world. There are no special caves here, but without them it turned out pretty well. We do not have exact data on the area of ​​the world of Far Cry 3, but, according to local reports, the world of the third part turned out to be much smaller.

8th place. Mad Max (50 km?).

If you find fault, then you can repeat after the developers who insisted that the world of Mad Max is endless. But we know that it is not so. As soon as you enter the map zone, an inscription appeared on the whole screen that, they say, this is a wild wasteland, and you have absolutely nothing to do here. And, really, there was nothing to do, because in this very wasteland there was nothing useful at all. As for the world, the situation is as follows: the world does not open immediately. From the first minutes, you cannot get behind the wheel and drive it diagonally. Maps are opened in small areas, and therefore they do not make a special impression, and they are not striking in scale. However, the world, due to the "car" of the game, is still big.

7th place. The Witcher 3 (52 km?).

With the area of ​​the game world of the third Witcher, the story is as follows. At the pre-release stage, the developers announced 139 square kilometers. We then still considered, and were surprised that, they say, this is three times more than that of Skyrim. But there is one nuance: the developers calculated the area of ​​the entire map, with seas, mountains that cannot be climbed, and with all buildings that cannot be entered. And, in general, the area of ​​the playable map is a little more than fifty square kilometers, and this is with the addition of Blood and Wine. Without it, it turns out something in the region of forty. So, as we can see, the best, in my personal opinion, open world, turned out to be not at all as big as it seemed, because we still have six more games ahead.

6th place. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (74 km?)

I would love to tell you about Dragon Age: Inquisition Plaza, but unfortunately I don't have the information. So get what I own. The world of the new Zelda is really big. There is where to turn your shoulder, but, as in the Inquisition, the density of content had to be sacrificed for the spaciousness. The map, to be sure, is empty and monotonous. You run through the forests and steppes, and only the animals jumping up on the way will diversify the transitions between interesting, truly playable, locations. But the world is really big, and if it were not for the mini-map, one could easily get lost in it, endlessly winding through the hills and ravines.

5th place. Grand Theft auto V (80 km?).

I wanted to put Watch Dogs 2, but in the genre of urban open-world action games, the latest GTA has no competitors, and will not be until Cyberpunk 2077 is released. So what do we have? And we have a huge map, the world of which is twice more peace Skyrim and 5 times the size of the Fallout 4 world. So it turns out that in Skyrim there are huge open spaces and cities, in Fallout, like, like, the Wasteland, and here there is only one city with its surroundings, and such a scale. But, you need to consider the following: this area was calculated, taking into account the territory over which you can fly by plane. With the same success it would be possible to calculate and sea ​​world the third Witcher, thanks to which the game about the adventures of Geralt of Rivia would be noticeably higher.

The best, not the best, but the world in it is very large, and perhaps even larger than the world of Assassin's Creed: Unity. However, the record, it seems, will not stand for long, because Ubisoft will soon release a new part about Egypt. where there is Egypt, there is a desert, and where there is a desert, there is a minimum of content, which means that you can make a huge world. the scale of the new Assassin's Creed, I dare not.

3rd place. Xenoblade Chronicles X (340 km?).

You hardly expected to see this game here. Another action game for Nintendo consoles with a huge world. But here you also need to understand: the world, although large, is empty. In addition, the method of movement in it seems to be the most high-tech in our entire hit parade. It's one thing to run on foot, ride horses, or even drive cars, and quite another to navigate futuristic, hovercraft spacecraft. In general, the world is big, but - there is an opinion - fans are unlikely to distinguish their geographic location from screenshots, think, someone will conduct such an experiment. There are no memorable places on the map, but 340 square kilometers is no joke either.

A gorgeous result that will not be easy to overcome. True, as practice shows, the size of the world is not always a guarantee of the high quality of the game, and this particular action did not perform as optimists expected: there is too much monotony, but the world is really huge.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

In races, the open world is often unnecessary: ​​there is practically nothing to do in between competitions. One of the few exceptions is NFS: Most Wanted. Freedom of movement first appeared in Underground 2, but the concept is best represented in the next game.

The project is dedicated to street racing - then it was still fashionable. The hero needs to be at the top of the list of the best street racers in the sunny city of Rockport. RPG is a genre for which the open world is almost mandatory. Complete freedom of action at times turns into total boredom: nothing happens in the game, quests are already fed up with it. The Polish series "The Witcher" evaded the troubles of role-playing projects. A routine walk from one village to another can turn into a new investigation, which involves an ancient curse, unfortunate lovers, local drunks, ghosts, witches and the elder of the settlement - sometimes all at once.

The Witcher Geralt is a medieval freelancer and uniformed parasite. Has no permanent source of income, not a fool to drink, have fun and spend time playing dice, works from time to time, as orders appear. True, it would be difficult for tax collectors to receive a refund from him to the royal treasury, and even more difficult - to send him to forced labor. The hero owns a sword better than any person, fights well with his fists, knows the approach to magical creatures.

The world of the third game turned out to be especially large and lively. Adventures happen at every turn. Climbing into the thick of the forest, you will find a hermit's hut, wander into the gateway - you will have to save the inept guard from the bandits, and so on all the time. The Witcher is constantly calling you somewhere, and you just need to turn off the path.

Fallout

The game did not become the first RPG in a post-apocalyptic setting. Nine years before the release of the debut part, Wasteland came out, which has now been revived. But it was Fallout that received the greatest fame and popularity.

Freedom of action is made absolute: no one cares what you do. More and more new quests appear, characters are lured with intriguing stories, but you can just go into the sunset to meet fate. Fallout is imbued with the spirit of adventurism - you want to explore this world thoroughly, and it pleases that many secrets are hidden in it.

Despite the aftermath of nuclear war, the Fallout world lives on. With complete freedom, you will not have to be bored - events, as in The Witcher, will appear on their own.

The elder scrolls

The action changes from part to part: the central region of the world of Tamriel - Cyrodiil - is shown in TES IV: Oblivion, in northern Skyrim we find ourselves in TES V, we go through the province of Morrowind in the third number game, and so on. All locations are terribly fun to explore.

The Elder Scrolls has a lot of shortcomings: the same type of tasks, a strange role-playing system. For example, nothing prevents a warrior character from undergoing training in the Mages Guild - this is about how a humanities student will receive a physics and mathematics diploma. And how much can be said about balance: about the automatic growth of enemy levels relative to your hero (see Oblivion), and about killing a dragon with one arrow (see Skyrim).

Ordinary people tell stories about going to work, sitting with friends in cafes and sleeping during breaks. The combat system has received many advantages here since the time of the second part, Signs have gained in usefulness, the world is as detailed and open as possible.

You are a mysterious someone, your goal is to get to the sooooo distant mountain. The synopsis of the plot is described by this more than completely, but you can not even imagine what a magical and unusual gaming experience is hidden behind it. A strong and dramatic story that the creators managed to tell without using words (at least understandable to humans) at all.

There is no cooperative as such here: you will play as both brothers at the same time(prepare joysticks, it will be hard without them). At first, the brain will refuse to understand how this is at all possible, but over time it will get involved and even begin to enjoy such a process. The gameplay is original and intuitive: only two buttons for interacting with the outside world, and two sticks for controlling the brothers.
