What distinguishes the canon kit from the body. What is body and kit

  • Date: 05.02.2019

Often my friends, who know that I am a amateur photographer, consult with me about this or that choice. And quite often when choosing the first SLR camera, the same questions are heard, namely "What is a kit?", "What is the body?",  “What is the difference between kit and body?"And the like. In order not to retell the same thing every time, I decided to write this short article.

Body

If you open the price list with sorting by price, then first of all you will see options body. In a word body (english Body) those positions in prices are denied when the camera is sold without a lens. Slang is often spoken simply. "Carcass". If you already have a set of suitable lenses, or you plan to immediately buy a more suitable lens for your tasks, be it a fast fix, such as nikkor 50 / 1.8 or travel-zoom, for example, nikkor 18-200VR, then body variant your choice. After all, why overpay for an additional lens, which you will not use ?? At Nikon, the box on the delivery package body indicates only the model of the camera itself.

Kit

If you are faced with the choice of your first SLR camera with interchangeable optics, and at the same time do not know which of the lenses you will need in the future, you will need kit. Kit  This is a kit, a camera with a lens. And do not be intimidated by the expression "whale lens", it is suitable for photographing not only whales. It simply means that cameras were sold with such a lens. Typically, these kits are somewhat (and sometimes that is significant) cheaper than buying a camera and a lens separately. And if your choice fell on one of the Nikon cameras, then on the box you will see both the camera model and the model of the complete lens.

It should also pay attention to exactly what lens is equipped with your chosen camera, usually indicated in the price lists. Because, for example, Nikon, the same camera can be equipped with different lenses, and the price will depend on it. You should also carefully look at the box when buying, because it is so easy to confuse the options with two inconspicuous letters VR  (or IS in the case of canon) and without them. And without these magic letters, your lens will be without an optical stabilization system, and such lenses are usually cheaper than similar ones with stabilization.

There are also other, rather rare, configuration options:

Double kit(double whale) - an option when buying a camera is equipped with two lenses at once, usually it is a universal zoom + moderate telezum.

There are still quite rare options when the seller completes such sets as the camera plus a lens. In this embodiment, various combinations and completeness and prices are possible, for example, the Nikon D90 camera can be equipped with a third-party lens, for example Tamron  or Sigma. I am always wary of such options, because it often turns out that separately buying a similar camera and lens is cheaper. Or in the set to the running product give in the load less running goods, albeit with a discount.

Good afternoon, dear readers! I hope that you have already become accustomed to the idea that the camera is far away, but nevertheless there are still physical limitations that will not allow you to shoot complex plots with compacts or mirrors (mirrorless) of the budget segment. In subsequent articles, we figured out that there are three main ones, of which only SLRs and mirrorless cameras provide a wide range of possibilities for creativity; we got acquainted with them. Many, probably, had a desire to purchase a camera. If not, then this information will still be useful for your overall development.

Cameras are sold in two trim levels: Body (carcass) and kit (whale or standard set). In a simple way, the body is a separate camera without a lens and looks like this:

Kit is a camera with a lens that is a ready-to-work system.

In online stores, and in ordinary, too, the camera in the Body package is called as follows: “Nikon D800 Body”. In the whale version, next to the camera model, the name of the lens is present. Example: “Nikon D3200 18-55mm VR Kit”.

There is such a thing as a whale lens. This is the optics that comes in a set with a camera. Usually it does not differ in high quality due to low luminosity. Advanced photographers also complain of “blurring” the pictures and not enough sharpness with detail. In the majority of whale sets of SLR cameras there are lenses of the following focal lengths: 18-55 mm, 18-105 mm, 18-135 mm. Less common are 17-85 mm, 24-105 mm, and others. As you can see, they all cover a wide range of focal lengths, which allows you to shoot from almost wide-angle scenes to waist and even facial portraits.

Whale lenses usually have a low luminosity. This means that in difficult lighting conditions it will be hard to get good photos. As for low sharpness, it depends on the lens model. For example, Nikon's Nikon 18-55mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX lens is very good and provides sufficient sharpness and detail. Do not be intimidated by such a huge name - later you will learn how to easily decipher these names. And I would not recommend the Nikkor 18-105 mm f / 3.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX variant for purchase. If you have questions about specific models, please contact in the comments.

findings

- The quality of whale lenses is not very high. This is especially true of low luminosity and low sharpness.

- The camera kit “Kit” allows you to get a full-fledged lens at a cheap price. Buying separately a camera (carcass) and a whale lens, you will pay much more. This is an excellent opportunity for beginners to take pictures and understand what characteristics are missing. And based on this, you should select a more advanced optics. As for people with an already formed set of lenses, they are hardly worth buying a whale kit. But those of this article most likely do not read)

Many people are interested in what the kit means on the camera and what is the difference between body and kit. Kit- this “Set”, that is, the camera is equipped with some kind of lens.

If you buy your first device with interchangeable optics, then you need a kit, unless you have already decided on the choice of the lens. Sometimes you can hear the expression “whale lens”, this does not mean that only whales can be photographed with such a lens. The whale lens is the one that came with the camera. Whale lenses are different, but usually Nikon completes certain models of devices with certain lenses. What kind of lens is included in the kit, you need to look at the box.

Those who are just buying their first SLR can hear the words kit (whale) and body (bodie). Kit in translation from English is a kit. This means that it is said about the lens that comes with the camera. But you can not call any lens Kit. Each company producing photographic equipment has a number of universal lenses that are suitable for most shooting situations. This optics is not high cost, but quite reliable and has good, though not top performance. When buying a first DSLR, you definitely need to take a complete lens to work at different focal lengths.

Whale lens is also called whale. He has nothing to do with this huge mammal. This is just an adaptation for the Russian-speaking population. Not infrequently the same model of the camera can be sold complete with different lenses. The most common is 18-55mm and 28-105mm.

Body is a camera without a lens. It is also called the carcass. Such a camera option is suitable for those photographers who already have a number of lenses and a great desire to buy a newer camera model. Optics do not become obsolete for years and sometimes decades, but the regularity of the release of new cameras is extremely high. Those who wish to keep pace with the times can simply buy new carcasses every couple of years and use their fleet of lenses with them.

Buy a professional SLR camera by choosing a kit lens, or postpone the purchase of a long-awaited purchase indefinitely? Save some money and immediately buy a decent lens in addition to your favorite camera? Perhaps these are the two most common and complex issues that arise for the buyer of expensive equipment. As in any case, there are pros and cons here.

To begin with, let's define what a kit lens is and what a body is. Body - from ang. The “body” or “carcass”, as people call it, is the main part of the camera, which contains such important things as the matrix, the battery and the built-in flash.

Kit - from ang. “Kit” is a standard lens that comes with this camera model. That is, in other words, the body is the brain of your camera, and Kit is his eye. If you already have a lens - buying a camera with a kit lens does not make sense. But, if you are a novice photographer and have financial limitations, a kit lens can be a real way out for you. The newly purchased camera will not gather dust on the shelf in anticipation of the lens, which in most cases is half the cost of the carcass itself. You will be able to practice and get pleasure from your shots, and perhaps simultaneously earn new optics. In addition, there is always the risk that after some time you will understand that photography is not the meaning of your life and the camera is needed only to keep rare shots from holidays or family holidays. The functionality of the kit lens allows you to easily remove both the room and the portrait by turning the zoom rings. Yes, and on a journey with you, you can safely take it because of its lightness and compactness. Photographs taken in nature are clear enough, have a large resolution, and in most cases they have enough of a simple adjustment in the photo editor to take a worthy place in the family photo album. In other words, the kit lens is indispensable for studying in the field of photography. And if undesirable scratches from improper handling appear on the glass, it will not be so pitiful to replace it with a more advanced model later on than the same 16-20t.r lens.

But it is worth mentioning here about those people who are in love with photography and strive to develop their creative skills more and more. About six months later, such people begin to realize the shortcomings of the Kitov lens. It takes the first euphoria after shooting with a soap dish. Comparing photos taken with a kit lens with photos taken with expensive lenses, you can see that they lose in quality: weak aperture, zoom is often not enough, you can also remove a bug from a macro with restrictions, in a dark room there is a lot of noise in the pictures, faces blurred. In defense of the kit lens, I want to say that all lenses with a variable focal length are losing in comparison with a fixed focus in quality and luminosity. There is no one universal lens that would be good in everything. In the future, you can always buy a set of 2-3 lenses aimed at the implementation of certain functions.
