There is no gravity in their cosmology either: objects are attracted to the Earth because it is supposedly constantly moving upwards with an acceleration of 9.8 m / s². And finally, there is no atmospheric pressure.

Who are all these people?

In ancient times, people really believed that the earth was flat. This concept appears in the cosmogonic myths of the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians, in Hinduism, Buddhism and Scandinavian mythology. However, early scientific research gave an idea that the Earth has the shape of a ball. For example, Aristotle in 330 BC. er cited evidence of Earth's sphericity. In particular, he noted that the starry sky in different latitudes looks different.

In the Middle Ages, views on the structure of the universe differed diversity. Shenton deeply embraced the ideas of Roubotem. Shortly before the launch of the first satellite in the USSR, he said: “Does swimming around the Isle of Wight prove that it has the shape of a ball? It's the same with these satellites. ” Because of the space race, the ideas of society did not gain popularity. But with the advent of the new president, journalist Charles Johnson, the theory of flat Earth has gained many supporters. Johnson acted as a professional media worker: the Apollo program became the information channel for popularizing the ideas of society. The leaders of the company publicly claimed that the landing on the moon was a hoax, filmed in Hollywood according to the script of Arthur Clarke or Stanley Kubrick. The society gained several thousand supporters and existed until the death of Johnson in 2001. He was later revived by Samuel Shannon’s namesake, Daniel, in the form of a website.

In the United States, the ideas of the flat Earth were defended and promoted by religious fundamentalists, such as John Alexander Dowie and Wilbur Glenn Voliva, who led the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church, founded by Dowie in 1895. At the same time, many church representatives criticize their views. Thus, the TV channel "Tsargrad" published critical material about the film by Igor Prokopenko "And the Earth is flat!"

With the advent of popular Internet services, such as YouTube and Twitter, it has become much easier to spread such ideas. If earlier members of society had to scatter leaflets, now it is enough to post a video or post a tweet.

However, all this did not make any impression on those present during the “flat land” experience, led by William Carpenter, - John Hamden did not dare to take part in the experiment. Instead, he sent his secretary, who assured everyone present that the circle and the band were on the same level. And the discrepancy observed in a telescope is so, a consequence of the aberrations (i.e. errors) of its lenses.
The judge of this betting experiment, the editor Walsh, ruled that Mr. Wallace had won, and presented him with an award despite the loud protests of William Carpenter and his enraged like-minded people. Soon they filed a lawsuit against the "fraudster" Wallace.

Three judges, having heard the statement of claim, refused to pass a decision on a scientific issue, which “does not fall within the competence of state law”.

In 2011, the All-Russian Center for the Study of Public Opinion obtained an unexpected result during the survey: 32% of Russians claimed that the sun revolves around the earth, and not vice versa.

However, the court ruled that this bet did not have legal force, therefore Mr. Hamden, who did not recognize Mr. Wallace’s measurements as reliable, should get his money back.

But even this did not diminish the rage of Carpenter, who began the “campaign for justice,” which took the form of the cruel persecution of Wallace, which lasted for 16 years! Thus, the "flat land" sent letters with threats and insults to the wife and children of Wallace, and also notified all the listeners of his lectures that they would be considered accomplices to the "fraudster".
In the end, Wallace demanded the protection of his good name in court, and Carpenter was sentenced to a year in prison. But, having been released, he soon resumed the persecution of Wallace.

As a result, Wallace was almost completely devastated by legal costs and brought to nervous exhaustion. Well, Carpenter emigrated to America, where he continued to fervently preach the ideas of the flat Earth of Roubotem.

"Plots" on the back of the planet

In America, Roubotem’s ideas were received by John Alexander Dowie, who founded the Christian Catholic Apostolic Church at the beginning of the 20th century. The idea of ​​a flat land was far from the most savage of the Dowie propagated. Even the most primitive savages have medicine. And Dowie forbade his followers to take any kind of medicine and consult a doctor. All the ailments in his organization were treated only with supplications ("spiritual healing").

These practices - “spiritual healing,” “healing by faith,” are still very popular with charismatic (non-Pentecostal) people. According to the teachings of these American sects, the wrong thinking of a person is the cause of all his troubles and illnesses. It is necessary to create an image of health and wealth in your imagination, and then preach it to yourself and others: “I am healed, I am healthy! I succeed, I am rich ... ". And the ephemeral image will become a tangible reality. But to talk about their problems is impossible. Since, having said out loud about the problem, the person with her will remain so, in a word having created his own reality. That is, charismatic people force a person who has fallen into their sect to deny out loud any unsightly reality (illness, poverty), and in exchange loudly preach what they want (health, wealth). With the help of such a simple psychological trick, charismatic spiritual leaders successfully manipulate ordinary sectarians.

Led by the Dowie, the “plots of the land” founded the settlement of Zion on the shore of Lake Michigan in 1905. Wilbur Glenn Voliva reigned over this city from 1906 to 1942. And all the years, the “overseer” of Zion Voliva made his subjects believe that the Earth is a fixed flat disk whose center is the North Pole, surrounded by an ice wall, and behind it is hell. The sun and the moon are small and are not far from us. Wilbur tried unsuccessfully to bring this creed out of Zion.

Society of "flat minds" today

The World Heritage Society was revived in 1956 by Samuel Shenton called the International Flat Earth Society. When he was shown pictures of Earth from orbit, Shenton smiled ironically and uttered:
“It’s easy to see how photos of this sort can fool an unknowing person.”
As for the landing of Americans on the moon, then, according to Shenton, a documentary film, perpetuating this fact, was filmed in Hollywood according to the script by Stanley Kubrick or Arthur Clarke. This version of the main "flat land" is very popular.

In 1971, the American Charles Johnson became president of the International Flat Earth Society, receiving, in his words, “random education and poor knowledge of grammar,” but having “logical thinking, not as deformed as most people do.” His society distributed literature in which the idea of ​​a flat Earth was upheld. During the 30 years of Johnson’s presidency, the number of members of his society has increased from a few dozen to 3,000 people from different countries.
  After his death in 2001, the International Flat Earth Society disintegrated into a number of organizations. They interact with each other and enlighten humanity with the idea of ​​a flat Earth.

Perhaps in the near future, if all countries and nations merge into one, faith in a flat Earth will become mandatory for most people on our planet. Forcing people to believe in the unbelievable (for example, in a flat Earth) and deny the obvious, it is not difficult to control their consciousness.
