Apple company. Which Apple Watch to buy: a comparison of the characteristics of current models When the first apple watch came out

  • Date: 02.01.2021

After a year of rumors and speculation, Apple has finally unveiled a new version of the Apple Watch Series 4 smartwatch. And this is perhaps the most interesting gadget update since the first version of the watch was released. The watch is still stylish, functional and comfortable, with a whole host of changes both on the outside and inside, including a number of features that one would never want to use.

Naturally, the most notable update on the Apple Watch Series 4 is the increased size of the OLED display. True, along with the size of the screen, the size of the case has also increased. Now the watch is produced in two sizes: 40 or 44 mm, against 38 or 42 mm in the devices of the previous series. According to Apple, although the case has increased in size, in terms of sheer volume, this watch is smaller than the previous one. This means they have become thinner, but this indicator has not yet been announced.

The screen size of the 40 mm version is 32% larger than that of the 38 mm version of the previous generation, the screen of the 44 mm version is 35% larger than that of the 42 mm version. Despite the increased size of the case, Apple Watch is compatible with all existing Apple Watch bands.

Another notable update is the Digital Crown. It's gotten a bit flatter and now has tactile feedback when scrolling - a slight click-through feel during use. An ECG electrode is integrated into the crown, but more on that later.

A microphone hole appeared below the crown, which was moved to the other side of the speaker in order to avoid interference between them. This is done in order to achieve better quality calls. The speaker, according to the manufacturer, has become louder by 50%, which also cannot but please. The back of Apple Watch Series 4 is made with sapphire crystal and ceramic for better radio transmission.

The new version of the watch is available in an aluminum case in three colors: silver, gold and space gray, as well as a stainless steel case in two colors: silver and space black. There is also a new color for the case in the gold stainless steel model. This model comes with a gold-colored braided Milanese bracelet.

Along with the new watch, Apple has introduced a number of new strap options, including different colors of silicone, fabric and leather accessories. The new straps will be available this fall.

There are also some significant updates under the hood of the Apple Watch Series 4. One of them is the new S4 processor with a 64-bit dual-core chip. It provides 2x better performance than its predecessor. That said, battery life remains the same, and Apple is promising "24/7 battery life" for the 4 Watch series.

As an operating system, the novelty, of course, will use the latest version of Watch OS 5, which will be presented later this month. We have previously reviewed including Walkie Talkie for communication between Apple Watch users, Siri voice assistant and Breathe app.

Unsurprisingly, as the screen got larger, the company optimized the interface to take advantage of the extra screen real estate. For greater convenience, icons and fonts have become larger, several widgets and dials have been added, and extensions have become more informative.

One of the most important innovations in body monitoring is the presence of an electrocardiogram sensor. Apple Watch 4 is the first smartwatch to feature such a sensor. Something similar was announced by Huami in the new watch, which will be presented on September 15th.

A new ECG application and sensors on the back panel as well as in the Digital Crown are used to take the ECG. To get the heart rate data, just enter the app and put your finger on the crown for 30 seconds. All cardiogram data are saved in the Health application in PDF format, and then can be transferred to doctors.

Also, the new gadget received an improved gyroscope and accelerometer. They allow the gadget to detect unusual movements such as sliding or falling. If the sensors detect a fall, the screen asks if everything is in order or if emergency assistance is needed. If there is no answer within 60 seconds, the watch will automatically send a signal to emergency services or relatives indicating the location. This is exactly the function that I would like to never use, as we talked about at the beginning.

The watch will also be able to track some new kinds of sports modes, such as Yoga and Hiking, but this is more related to the watchOS 5 operating system than to the watch itself.

Apple Watch Series 4 (GPS + Cellular) will be available to order from September 14, and will go on sale September 21 in 16 countries. This list includes Australia, UK, Germany, Hong Kong, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Canada, China, UAE, Singapore, USA, Switzerland, Sweden, France and Japan.

In terms of cost, it ranges from $ 399 to $ 749, depending on size, material and strap. See the table below for details. By the way, the price now starts at $ 279, which is cheaper than ever.

Along with the new iPhones, Apple has also updated its line of smartwatches. The third generation Apple Watch cannot boast of radical improvements, but pleases with additional sensors and modes of operation, and also promises smoother operation thanks to the new SoC. We got acquainted with the watch and used it in real life. In this article - all the details!

Before we get into what's new and what the Apple Watch Series 3 is, let's take a look at the current Apple Watch lineup.

As we recall, the first Apple Watch came in two sizes (42 and 38 mm) and two types of materials: aluminum Apple Watch Sport with Ion-X glass and steel Apple Watch with sapphire crystal. In addition, there was also the elite Apple Watch Edition series, but it can be ignored, since the watch for a million is a very tiny segment.

When a year later the manufacturer introduced the second generation of watches, there was no longer a steel version, but the first generation was still on sale in all its variety. And now, with the release of Apple Watch Series 3, it was decided not to confuse buyers completely and by a strong-willed decision to limit the choice to size (42 or 38 mm), generation (Series 1 or Series 3; Series 2 watches are no longer presented in the Apple Store) and color ( Silver, Gold, White, or Space Gray).

Alas, now you cannot buy a watch with a stainless steel case and sapphire crystal, although it was a really wonderful design decision. You can't even choose between Series 2 and Series 3. But the price of Series 1 has dropped to 18,490 rubles, so the selection strategy has become extremely simple: if you want to save money - take any version of Series 1, if you want much wider functionality - Series 3. At the same time, in terms of appearance, they practically do not differ (except for the color and straps, of course).

Let's take a look at the characteristics of the Apple Watch Series 3 and compare them with the two previous generations.

Of course, according to these characteristics, little can be said about the innovations of the Apple Watch Series 3, especially compared to Series 2. Apple has not disclosed details about the single-chip systems: not even the frequency of the CPU cores has been disclosed. It is only known that there are two of them in all SoCs, but Series 3 has the most productive SoC.

We cannot verify this with any tests, but traditionally the difference will be felt with the release of new versions of watchOS. For example, on the very first Apple Watch, the new watchOS 4 significantly slows down.

As we can see, the main difference is the potential availability of the cellular version. However, it should be noted that in Russia such options are not yet officially on sale, since our operators do not yet support this option in the form that Apple implements (via eSIM and using the same number from the iPhone). However, I think this is a matter of time.

We will talk about the rest of the differences in this article.

Equipment

The packaging of the aluminum version of the Apple Watch Series 3 looks the same as the Apple Watch Series 2 and the first generation Apple Watch Sport. This is an elongated box made of thick cardboard.

The complete set of the new item is identical to that of the models of previous generations: in addition to the watch itself, it is a silicone strap (with a spare half of a smaller size so that you can choose the best one for your hand), a 5 V 1 A charger, a USB cable with a wireless charging tablet at the end and leaflets with information for the user.

The charger from the new Apple Watch is fully compatible with Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 1. And vice versa. Therefore, accessories, such as a handy docking station, will work as well.

Design

The appearance of the new product does not differ from its predecessor (Series 2). This is the same aluminum rectangular case with rounded corners and edges, as well as two buttons on the right side.

One of these buttons is oblong, the other is round, at the same time acting as a wheel that can be turned (Digital Crown). There is a feeling that the wheel scrolls more smoothly, and, on the contrary, the button presses are slightly tighter. But, firstly, we cannot compare directly, and secondly, even if this is so, then this is a plus, since it should have reduced the likelihood of accidental clicks and simplified the use of the wheel.

The screen size remains the same. We had a 42 mm version, and a 38 mm version is also available for sale. On the back we see a heart rate sensor, buttons for detaching the strap. The round area around the sensor is ceramic. On the left side there are speaker and microphone holes.

The thickness of the novelty is the same as that of the Apple Watch Series 2, which is a millimeter more than that of the first Apple Watch and is apparently explained by the increased moisture protection and the presence of a more capacious battery. However, the watch on the wrist looks no worse than the model of the first generation. The only pity is that there is no way to choose versions from other materials, but we have already complained about this and will not repeat ourselves.

Saving dimensions has one important plus: absolutely all models of all generations of Apple Watch, including Series 3, are fully compatible with all released straps. Considering that some of these straps are more expensive than the watch itself (for example, a steel block bracelet), it would simply be unfair to the people who bought them to change the strap attachment in the new generation of watches.

At the same time, Apple continues to expand its range of bands. And we will talk about this in the next section of the article.

2017 straps

Over the past six months, Apple has expanded its lineup several times. The most recent update, timed to coincide with the release of the Apple Watch Series 3, was, as expected, the most radical, but there are many interesting things among the spring-summer models. We managed to get to know them and even used some of them in everyday life.

Let's start with the brightest new item: a nylon Velcro strap. Apple is consistently expanding the types of fasteners. Velcro fastening is added to the magnetic clasps, the classic buckle, the butterfly buckle and the sports strap button.

Here the strap is a solid band without dividing into halves. It is attached to the clock using plastic blocks. And on the hand it is fixed, respectively, with the help of five Velcro. The advantage of this option is that you can flexibly adjust the size of the strap to fit your hand - down to a millimeter.

The very surface of the strap is made of nylon threads of different colors, this creates interesting shades: for example, the photo shows a black strap, but thanks to threads of other colors (it is difficult even to make out which ones) an unusual combination is obtained. In our opinion, this strap will fit well with a sweater or any other fluffy clothes of the autumn-winter type.

Another new strap is a variation on nylon straps. The essence is the same (fastening, fastener, combination of threads of two colors), but the very arrangement of the threads is different, which makes the pattern very different from what it was before.

Add to this the spring / summer collection of nylon straps. They retain the old type of weaving, but the approach to color is changing. If earlier intertwined threads of two colors formed a single color field, now there are options with multi-colored stripes. For example, the variant in the photo below Apple calls “yellow pollen”.

In the meantime, we were able to evaluate in everyday life three color options: "red", "blue lake" and "yellow pollen" (in addition to the previously described black). They are suitable for casual clothes and suggest the presence of some bright elements in the clothes. Ideally, the same shades in other details of the garment.

So for fashionistas this is, of course, an interesting task. But note that the colors do not look flashy or vulgar (for example, "wild berry" is a much more versatile option than any other type of pink straps). And the "blue lake" is an excellent option for denim clothes.

In addition, we note that when worn for a long time on the arm, the nylon straps do not cause any unpleasant sensations. On the contrary, over time they take the shape of a hand - as if created especially for you. It's nice. And for those who do not plan to actively use the watch in sports, the nylon strap is a completely successful alternative to the silicone or Nike strap (their cost is identical - about 4,000 rubles at the time of this writing).

These are, of course, summer solutions. However, they can be relevant in the fall - you want to keep the summer mood, even when there is darkness and slush outside the window.

There are also new colors for straps made of other materials. And along with the color, the texture of the surface was updated, so the straps began to feel differently. A striking example is the yellow leather strap with a classic buckle.

First, it is actually tricolor: the outer color is yellow, the inner surface is natural (dark beige), and the edges are gray. And secondly, the leather here is softer and more elastic than in the case of a brown and, even more so, black strap (we wrote about them earlier). In addition, oddly enough, the buckle itself is different, although it cannot be said that for the worse or for the better. It's just a little different.

As for the color itself, it is slightly lighter and brighter than in the photographs, without the orange tint. And it looks very cool - it gives a summer mood and becomes a great accent when worn with neutral clothes.

In addition, back in spring, regular sports bands were available in Smoke Blue, Pollen Yellow and Flamingo Pink, and the most extensively updated line was Nike. Light violet / white, violet dust / plum haze, orbit blue / gamma blue and obsidian / black diversified the previous poor set of strict shades.

Screen

Apple Watch Series 3 screen size and resolution have not changed compared to the first and second generations. The watch is available in two display sizes: 38 mm and 42 mm. Accordingly, their resolution also differs: 272 × 340 and 312 × 390, respectively. We had a watch with a screen diagonal of 42 mm and a screen resolution of 312 × 390.

We have carried out a detailed examination of the screen using measuring instruments. Below - the conclusion of the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexei Kudryavtsev.

The front surface of the screen is made in the form of a scratch-resistant glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface curved to the edges. On the outer surface of the screen there is a special oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating (effective, slightly better than that of Google Nexus 7 (2013)), so fingerprints are removed much easier, and appear at a slower rate than in the case of regular glass. Judging by the reflection of objects, the anti-glare properties of the screen are slightly better than that of the Google Nexus 7 2013. For clarity, here is a photo in which a white surface is reflected in the switched off screens:

The screen on the Apple Watch Series 3 is slightly darker (photo brightness is 105 versus 113 for the Nexus 7). There is no doubling of reflection, which indicates that there is no air gap between the layers of the screen. When the white field was displayed on the whole screen, the maximum brightness value recorded by us was about 650 cd / m² (with a bright backlight in the screen), the minimum - 60 cd / m² (the first stage of adjustment, lighting in the office).

It is worth making a reservation here: Apple promises a brightness of up to 1000 cd / m², but it is impossible to verify this, because when measuring the brightness, the light sensor partially overlaps and the brightness is automatically reduced, and it is impossible to disable this parameter. So we could not confirm the numbers promised by the manufacturer, but we have no reason not to trust Apple.

As already mentioned, the automatic brightness control by the light sensor always works. The user can only make adjustments to the operation of this function by choosing one of three levels. At any brightness level, there is modulation with a frequency of 60 Hz, but its amplitude is small, so flickering is not visible. The graphs of brightness (vertical axis) versus time (horizontal axis) illustrate the above:

This screen uses an AMOLED matrix, an active matrix organic light-emitting diode (OLED). A full-color image is created using subpixels of three colors - red (R), green (G) and blue (B) in equal numbers, which is confirmed by a fragment of a micrograph:

For comparison, you can see used in mobile technology.

The spectra are typical for OLED - the areas of primary colors are well separated and appear as relatively narrow peaks:

However, there is also cross-mixing of components (programmatically), so the coverage is not too wide, but adjusted to the sRGB borders:

Accordingly, typical images (with sRGB coverage) on the Apple Watch screen have natural saturation. Unfortunately, color profiles are not supported (or transferred when copying images to the watch), so even wide-gamut images are still displayed as sRGB. The color temperature of the white and gray field is approximately 7350 K, and the deviation from the spectrum of an absolutely black body (ΔE) is 4.4-4.7 units. The color balance is good. Black is just black at all angles. It is so black that the contrast setting is not applicable in this case. When viewed from a perpendicular view, the uniformity of the white field is excellent. The screen has excellent viewing angles with much less brightness drop when looking at the screen from an angle compared to LCD screens, but at larger angles, the white fades noticeably to blue. Overall, the quality of the Apple Watch screen is very high.

New opportunities

The watch comes with watchOS 4.0 preinstalled. You can read about its main innovations in, and what is said there is true for all generations of Apple Watch watches. Recall that even the very first generation is compatible with the latest OS. Here we will look at those functions and features that only apply to the Apple Watch Series 3 and are not available on older models.

So, perhaps, the main innovation of the Apple Watch Series 3, apart from the LTE connection, which is not yet available to Russian users, is constant and rather deep monitoring of cardiac activity. As Apple rightly notes, cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death today, especially among men. Moreover, their danger is that for a long time a person, already being unhealthy, may not feel any discomfort and, therefore, does not take any measures to prevent a heart attack or the like.

In addition, regular medical examination in Russia is still not established, and obtaining health certificates is nothing more than a formality. And somehow it is not customary for us to go without any complaints and check the heart. Therefore, the importance of continuous monitoring of the heart is difficult to overestimate. It is clear that this cannot be compared with diagnostics in medical centers and with the use of professional equipment, and it is foolish to expect that the watch will immediately diagnose us (although, who knows, maybe in 10 years we will live to see that). But Apple Watch Series 3 can alert you if it detects heart rate issues. And even if this is a mistake, it is better to play it safe.

So let's take a closer look at how this happens.

While you're wearing Apple Watch Series 3, the watch automatically measures your heart rate every few minutes. At the same time, they correlate the information received with your current activity (which, of course, are reported by other sensors - an accelerometer and a gyroscope), and if you were sitting still for 10 minutes, but your heart rate exceeded a predetermined threshold (by default, it is 120 beats with a minute), the watch will warn you.

You can view or change the settings in the Watch app on the iPhone by going to the "Heart rate" section.

In addition, the watch measures heart rate variability, that is, the difference in time between two heartbeats. This figure should be small.

All your heart observation information is automatically exported to the Health app. There, in a visual form, you can see to what values and when your heart rate rose, what was the average heart rate for a certain period of time and other useful information.

In fact, Apple Watch Series 3 now collects and provides the most information about the work of the heart from household non-professional devices. And, what is important, without any effort of the user. That is, you do not need to start measurements, then do something with the results, etc. You just wear the watch - and then you see all the results in the application on the iPhone.

Another innovation in Apple Watch Series 3 is the introduction of an altimeter. Thanks to him, the watch can measure the number of floors climbed and generally record your ups and downs. Note that in everyday use, the iPhone can collect the same information - moreover, in the Health application, it is the iPhone that is listed as a priority source. But, for example, on a hike or when playing sports, the watch will clearly be a more convenient tool.

And the latest innovation, available only on Apple Watch Series 3: Siri can now talk through the watch speaker (and the sound is quite clear and loud) or through AirPods. The manufacturer claims that this became possible thanks to a new, more efficient processor. Of course, it is difficult to call this an important innovation, but in certain situations it can really turn out to be useful.

Autonomous work

As before, we do not have tools that allow us to accurately test the battery life of the Apple Watch Series 3 - only subjective impressions. But if you rely on them, it turns out that Apple has done a really great job, and three days of work without recharging is already quite a reality for its watch.

Note that the first Apple Watch, updated to watchOS 4.0, worked with us for no more than two days. So there is a positive trend. Of course, the more intensively you use your watch, the faster it will drain, but if you use Series 3 solely for notifications and viewing the time, then you can safely count on three days.

conclusions

If we talk about the version without LTE, then the Apple Watch Series 3 is a rather modest update. The vast majority of the innovations reported by the manufacturer are related to watchOS 4, and not to the watch itself. Therefore, if you have an Apple Watch Series 2, then there is undoubtedly no reason to update. If you are the owner of Apple Watch Series 1, then it all depends on whether you need the innovations that we noted in Series 2, and whether the watch with watchOS 4 slows down. The very first generation (which, we recall, was functionally identical to Series 1, but with a twice slower SoC) there were some slowdowns and "pensiveness". So if you have the very first Apple Watch, then it's worth updating, and if it's Series 1, you still need to think carefully.

Perhaps the main feature of the Apple Watch Series 3 is serious heart monitoring. And this is perhaps an important argument, especially if you are a man over 40. But the main thing is a very productive signal to the entire industry and an attempt to answer the still urgent question: why do we need a smart watch at all?

Other innovations - the appearance of an altimeter and the possibility of voice response Siri - can hardly be considered really significant. But, strictly speaking, Apple does not offer to compare Series 3 and Series 2. Only Series 3 and Series 1 are now sold in the official store, so the third generation just replaced the second, adopting all its features (moisture protection, GPS) and adding a few of our own. This is probably a boring situation for reviewers and technologists, I would like Series 3 to be a more serious step forward. But, on the other hand, one cannot but rejoice that Apple is developing not only hardware, but also software, and even owners of models of previous generations can take advantage of watchOS 4 innovations.

From the same opera - and new straps, of which there are many (if you count all those released after the Apple Watch Series 2). They, like the operating system, are suitable for absolutely all Apple Watch models ever released. And for this, one can even forgive the lack of updating the design of the watch. Yes, again, a bit boring, but full compatibility with all existing straps. Apple clearly strives to convey to the doubters the idea: buy our watches now, they will be relevant for a long time. And to make it easier for them to make such a decision, the manufacturer has lowered prices for Series 1, so that the threshold for entering the "Apple Watch Owners Club" has become lower than ever.

Hello everyone! How good it used to be ... there is one iPhone model - you pick a color and buy it. There is one model of Apple Watch - I chose the size, color, strap ... I bought it. Now the lineup of gadgets from the Cupertino company has grown a lot, and at the same time, if we talk about watches, they are not so different. What to choose is absolutely incomprehensible.

In this article, we will not analyze the case materials, color, straps, individual models differ only in appearance and pre-installed software (such as Apple Watch Nike +), since the company constantly adds / removes various options (a lot has changed) and keep track of everything this is simply impossible.

Therefore, let's focus solely on the main differences between Apple Watch of different generations.

Well, whoever wants to see the current models and choose a strap can do it on the official website.

Everything. The introduction has dragged on - it's time to start. Let's go!

What's the difference between Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2?

I decided to summarize all the main characteristics in one table, here they are:

For those who are too lazy to study, I will highlight the most important points of difference between Series 2 and Series 1:

  1. Screen brightness. In the 2nd generation Apple Watch, the screen became twice as bright - 1000 nits versus 450 in the Series 1. The display resolution did not change.
  2. Water resistant. Series 2 can be submerged in water to a depth of 50 meters and they will have nothing. The very first model withstood only splashes.
  3. Dual core processor. Everything should work even faster!
  4. GPS. Apple has equipped the second Watch with a GPS module - now you can track the distance traveled directly on the watch.
  5. Slight increase in battery capacity. Most likely, this is due to the advent of GPS. It consumes some additional energy, and in order for the second generation of watches to work no less than the previous one, it was necessary to slightly increase the battery.

As you can see, on the one hand, the changes are not very significant. On the other hand ... in my opinion, water protection and GPS are very useful things that perfectly complement the image of a sports watch.

What's the difference between Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3?

Apple recently unveiled its 3rd generation watch - let's take a look at what the company has been working on for a whole year and what has changed since the Watch Series 2?

This time we will do without a comparative table, because Apple in the 3rd generation of its watches has also added a model with a built-in SIM card, which means that we have to compare as many as 6 “different” devices! Given the fact that the dimensions have remained practically unchanged (a couple of millimeters does not count), we will focus exclusively on the most important differences between Series 3 and Series 2.

So what's new with Watch 2017?

Nothing else has changed - these are the same good Apple Watch Series 2. With water protection, GPS, the promised runtime of 18 hours (with mixed use), etc.

So which Watch should you choose - 1st, 2nd or 3rd generation?

Actually, after all these comparisons, this is the most important question. Considering the fact that Apple releases new models approximately once a year, now we will find out - which watch to buy in 2017-2018?

It would seem that now we should have a choice from Series 1, 2 and 3. But the company makes money, so after the release of the 3rd generation, it left only Apple Watch 1 and 3 for sale. The release of the second model was discontinued. So, we will choose between the first and third versions:

  1. The Series 1 is worth buying if you need the watch as a kind of companion for your iPhone and nothing else. Receive notifications, watch the time, control music - the first generation of Watch does an excellent job of all these and many other functions.
  2. Series 3 is more about sports. GPS, full moisture protection, barometric altimeter are useful helpers during training.

And finally, let me remind you of the most important difference - the price.

The difference between Series 3 and Series 1 is on average 6000-8000 rubles. Agree, the amount is rather big and it is worth thinking about ... Are the additional chips worth the third version of that kind of money? Are they needed? Or is it complete and completely useless nonsense? It's up to you to decide!

P.S. It seems to me that the comparison is quite complete. However, if you have any questions or comments - welcome to the comments!

P.S.S. Is everything clear and there are no questions? Support the author with "like"! It's not hard for you, but I'm very pleased :) Thank you very much in advance!

Apple introduced the fourth generation of the Watch. The novelty received the most serious upgrade in the entire history of the line's existence - a 35% larger display, a built-in ECG scanner and many other innovations.

It has become a third larger and after the iPhone X has acquired the status of "frameless". As a result, noticeably more information is placed on the new screen, so that the use of the watch has become even more convenient - for example, the new “Infograph” dial offers 8 indicators at once, which would have been simply impossible on the previous diagonal.

At the same time, the physical size of the case of the Watch Series 4 themselves is even smaller than that of Series 3, and the watch itself has become thinner than the 2017 model! This did not in any way affect the compatibility of watches with accessories - straps from previous versions will easily fit the Watch Series 4. And the new LTPO technology has made the display even more energy efficient than its predecessor - the Series 4 can be used for almost a day.

Apple Watch Series 4 case

From now on, Apple watches are offered in two other case sizes - 40 and 44 mm (previously: 38 and 42 mm).

The Series 4 display area is 977mm² for the 44mm version and 759² for the smaller version. At the same time, the display area of Apple Watch Series 3 is significantly smaller - 740 mm² (42 mm) and 563 mm² (38 mm).

The watch thickness has decreased from 11.4 mm (Series 3) to 10.7 mm (Series 4).

In addition, the lower part of the case (the one that lies on the skin) is now made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal.

It's also worth noting that while the Series 4 case has been resized, older Apple Watch straps will remain compatible.

Digital crown

The familiar wheel has also undergone a radical redesign. So, the Digital Crown has a tactile response - when the user turns the wheel, he feels light clicks. Apple engineers reduced its size by a third, while making the part even more advanced (21% more components).

For the Watch Series 4, Apple has developed a new dual-core 64-bit S4 processor. Its performance has doubled compared to its predecessor, so using the gadget has become much more pleasant.

Apple engineers have also improved the speaker - now it is 50% louder, so working with Siri and receiving voice calls is now noticeably more comfortable.

Apple Watch Series 4 features

Apple Watch Series 4 has learned to recognize deviant (unusual, abnormal) sensor behavior. If the heart rate is too low for 10 minutes, the watch will warn the wearer about the risk of bradycardia.

But the truly new function is ... the ECG sensor ( will not work in Russia, more on that below). Yes, you understood everything correctly - now the Apple Watch, using a special standard application, can take an electrocardiogram in just 30 seconds and, if necessary, send it to the attending physician.

The electrocardiogram is measured by touching the flat surface of the Digital Crown, which contains a titanium electrode that reads the heart's electrical impulses at the fingertip.

In addition, the bottom of the watch has received an updated optical heart rate sensor.

Apple notes that previously, an ordinary user could not just come to the store and buy an ECG meter. But the new Watch is a completely different matter! In addition, Watch Series 4 is officially approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a medical device.

To our great regret, the ability to measure the ECG will be available only in the American Apple Watch, in Russia and other countries, the revolutionary function won't work... The limitation is due to the need to register Apple Watch as a medical device. And since this procedure requires a lot of permits from the competent authorities, Apple decided for the time being to limit the use of this functionality only in the United States, where the device has already received the status of a medical device.

In addition, updated sensors - accelerometer and gyroscope - and special software allow the watch to detect the fact that the wearer has fallen to the surface. If a person does not get up from it within a minute, Series 4 will automatically make a call to the emergency services.

Apple Watch Series 4 battery life

Apple left it the same - 18 hours. In practice, the result (if everything remains the same as in Watch Series 3) will be better - about two days of moderate use.

What's in the Apple Watch Series 4 box

 Watch Series 4 delivery set completely repeats the number of standard accessories of the previous model. In addition to the watch itself and the strap, the box contains a charging cable with a magnetic mount and a 5W power adapter.

Prices and the beginning of sales of Apple Watch Series 4 in Russia

Power and productivity

Also, the amount of memory will double, and the third version will have 2 GB. The strengthened battery will allow you to keep a charge for 10-12 hours longer, taking into account that the new product will consume more energy due to its power. iWatch will connect directly to the iPhone as usual.
