How to photograph in the fall, some practical advice

  • Date: 07.06.2019

Each season is beautiful in its own way, but autumn, with its riot of colors, is truly golden for photographers. However, in order not to miss this moment and to make truly interesting and beautiful photos, you need to know how to photograph in the fall. Knowing some of the subtleties, you can shoot wonderful autumn landscapes, even having an ordinary “digital camera”.

1. The main rule - you need to shoot in the "golden clock". It is appropriate in any season, but the autumn dawn and the sunset hours are filled with a special color, and if you choose the right time for shooting, the photos will come out very delicate and convey a unique autumn transparency. Shooting in the fall   should be produced mainly in.

2. It is important to follow the exposure. When using backlight for shooting, exposure compensation may be needed (by +1 or +2 steps).

3. In the absence of the ability to shoot in RAW format, the white balance is better to set to “cloudy” or “shadow”, this will allow you to get warmer colors of the photo. When shooting in RAW, white balance can easily be changed using an appropriate program on a computer. For more information about, you can read in one of the articles on the site.

4. If you are shooting a digital camera or a DSLR in automatic mode, it is better to set the shooting mode to “Landscape”. This will make the colors more juicy.

5. Knowing how to photograph autumn, and showing imagination, you can create a variety of subjects, from fun to dramatic. In the riot of autumn colors, someone will see a vivid manifestation of life, but for someone these leaves will become a symbol of dying. Without missing this interesting time, you can create a lot of interesting pictures.

6. When photographing in the fall, it is important to be able to beat the contrasting colors in the frame, which are so rich this time of year. The yellow leaves look very nice against the background of red and green, or against the blue sky, etc.

7. You can try to take a few frames from the "low point", putting the camera directly on the ground. So you can get a photo with a mushroom, to the cap of which the autumn leaf stuck, or with other, not less interesting objects.

8. Ripe fruits in trees can be excellent objects for shooting. Especially elegant they look on the trees, from which all the leaves have already fallen.

9. Very beautiful photos can be obtained by photographing the reflection. It doesn’t matter if it is reflected in a pond or a lake, or in an autumn puddle - the main thing is that such photos convey the autumn mood very subtly.

10. To make truly autumn photos, you must visit parks or gardens in search of suitable scenes, where you can find the most incredible landscapes and scenes at this time of year.

11. Having found a suitable place for photographing, you need to take care of good lighting. It is necessary to notice in advance what hours it is illuminated best of all, and take pictures at this particular time. Although you can try to take pictures and in cloudy weather, sometimes it gives quite amazing results.

12. Taking the fallen leaves home, you can attach them to the window glass, and when the sheet begins to "shine" in the sun, take a close-up photo or take a macro photo.

13. The hit of the autumn photos are pictures showing leaves thrown up. You can prevent “blurring” of their images by selecting the “sport” shooting mode, or using a short shutter speed (for example, 1/500 second).

14. To enhance image contrast and color saturation, use a lens hood to prevent “excess” light from the glare surfaces from entering the lens. About that, and what are its functions, you can read in one of the previous articles. In addition, a good effect can also be achieved due to the low sensitivity of the matrix (ISO 100 or 200). To prevent the appearance of color "noise" in the frame and glare, reducing the saturation of colors in the frame, you can use.

15. Those who do not photograph, but act as a model, should carefully consider the choice of clothes for shooting. You need to try to choose for her those colors that will be in harmony with the bright foliage, so that the pictures can best convey the unique charm of the autumn colors.

To create this or that atmosphere in the pictures, it often requires a special outfit, the spirit and the element of the production, something extraordinary. It is necessary to find what brings zest to the photo. And the preparation for the process of creating a good, suitable photo can take the longest time.

However, it is not always possible to do with the existing props. If you run through all your friends, you can find some small, but very important, I would even say the key detail for the photo. Below are some features of the preparation and creation of a beautiful, professional picture - let's consider them.

Autumn photo shoot with the right white balance (BB)

The canonical autumn is golden, bright yellow, red tones giving rise to a storm of the brightest colors. As a rule, the best BB will be “Sunny Day”, it will create a certain bright contrast. If you change the BB to "Cloudy", then the photo will become more stand out and become noticeable bright red tones. What exactly are these settings so good? They change colors in a special way for the autumn, emphasizing and intensifying the warm colors, and remove the natural blue from sunlight.

“Cloudy” mode is designed for the fact that a significant amount of natural light is delayed by clouds, because BB increases saturation and contrast transition from one hue to another. Asking " how to photograph in the fall“Should take this into account.

Contrast

Enhancing the contrast of light and shade, as well as the overall color contrast, can play an equally important role in creating high-quality photos than adjusting the BB and creating a specific color spectrum. If you do not go deep into the subtleties of the perfect shooting, then you can make a high-quality photo, on which the golden gold leaves and natural sunlight will be the main focus. To do this, you must put the white balance in the "Auto" mode.

Photographer: Nikolay Zavarin.

Exactly. If in the first case the main aspect was made to change the color perception of the camera, then now the spirit of autumn will be transmitted exclusively through the play of light and shadow, and let the camera independently choose the WB settings.

The correct depth of field for the autumn photo shoot

Everyone knows and understands that the photos in the “embrace” of the golden autumn are nothing more than a photo in nature. Pay attention to all the pictures. They should be multidimensional and as expressive as possible. Photograph just withering trees and withered foliage under their feet - the lot of amateurs.

In this you will be happy to help change the depth of field of the image. It is best to make the settings manually, maximally by expanding the aperture. This is an effective and easy technique that is available to the photographer of any level of training. How is this done?

First, you need to change the shooting mode from auto to aperture priority (on the device, it is denoted by Av). Then you need to set almost the smallest aperture value. On high-aperture lenses, 2.8 is an excellent value. Depending on how hard the hand of the photographer is, it can be assumed with what probability a really sharp and sharp picture without photodetections will turn out (I wrote about some of them here). Or use a tripod. After setting, focus on the desired object and press the shutter button! Voila, the key element of the snapshot will be as if torn off, accentuated in comparison with other, “background” elements.

How to photograph in the fall   with a combination of all these moments? Such techniques should be resorted to in the event that the photographer tries to capture not just the whole picture at once, but only a certain object. In conditions of high riotous colors in the frame, the ability to highlight the priority element is very important.

Time for an autumn photo shoot

It is believed that the fall is not suitable for shooting time. And this is seriously so. Morning or early day can reward the photographer with interesting shadows in the picture. Early October morning can give a real magic and mysterious fog, or frost, which will provide a soft background and long shadows (by the way, they can also be elegantly used when shooting). And the golden sunshine before sunset itself can alter the autumn weather that seemed earlier.

Photographer: Olga Samoilova.

As for the weather, there is no losing option here either. A clear and clear sky will bring an abundance of light, shadows and brightness of the violent play of colors of autumn, while overcast and prolonged - contrast, variations of the game of sharpness and dim light. All this is an experienced photographer can wrap on its side. The same landscape or perspective may look very different after only a few hours.

A little advice to all novice photographers: if you take into account the time relative to seasonal orientation, you need to take exactly the period when the leaves are just beginning to fall. This will reward you with golden and still magnificent crowns, which nevertheless managed to spread around themselves a carpet from the past attire. So the answer is obvious - it is best to photograph the warm days of autumn. On cold leaves, they quickly become faded and dark, which in no way decorates a photo.

Technical equipment

Contrary to all opinions and newfangled trends, you can create masterpieces and the usual "soap box". Sufficient quality of shooting can be a wide resolution of 6 megapixels. A sufficient stock of the latter ensures high clarity in all the details of the photo, as well as facilitate subsequent processing (for example, the framing process).

One of the most important parameters of photographic equipment is the noise level of the matrix, which can significantly spoil the quality of the photo in bad weather conditions. Attention should also be given to color reproduction. It is necessary to understand that such parameters as the rate of fire of the camera for such purposes does not play a key role, because we do not remove the photo essay (you can read more about it here). Successful autumn photo session, as we see, is not easy.

Of course, a SLR camera can provide much clearer shooting. If you take a SLR, then the lens plays an important role. Regular kit (it is also called "whale"), can not always be ideally suited to this kind of shooting because of the "capricious" in relation to the light and light differences of the lenses.

As a rule, for such photo shoots they use a wide-angle lens or a “fix” lens, that is, with a fixed focal length. This is seriously important because a weakness in light perception can significantly degrade the quality of images in low light conditions. A lens with adjustable focal length is, of course, an excellent and practical thing, although options with a fixed distance can produce a much clearer and better result.

Photographer: Anastasia Sokolova.

If you still need a zoom lens, do not chase the giant double digits in the description of the multiplicity. Hyperzum can be useful for tourist shooting, when you need to take photographs of extremely distant objects, and in everyday use it is not necessary for shooting landscapes and portraits in the zone of direct reach.

Before how to photograph in the falltake care of some more factors. Among them - a direct hit of sunlight, as well as natural, even if minor camera vibrations in the hands of man. To solve the first problem, it is recommended to buy a special protective hood. In the second case, the tripod will be very useful. Many cameras and lenses are equipped with a shooting stabilizer, although this is not a panacea.

Frame layout

The most important thing is not to leave a void in the picture. Autumn photo session must emphasize the details of the withering of nature, as well as the beauty of its charm in this period. We must try to fill the frame. If the sky - then necessarily clouds or clouds. If the foreground is any vegetation, be it a shrub, flower bed or anything else. And so on. If we neglect this moment, the photos will look lifeless and made hastily. If you can’t pick a specific environment, then framing can help.

Photographer: Lars van de Goor.

You should also understand that it is stupid to shoot "just a view." I repeat that it is necessary to always focus the attention of our future viewer on any particular object, so that the environment becomes just a background. Such pictures come out as sensual and emotional as possible. Anything can fulfill this role, so long as it is logically justified as to the goal of the photoset itself.

It is worth noting a number of features of autumn photography, significantly different, for example, from winter or beach shots:

  • The most important thing is to choose the right time for shooting. Sunsets and sunrises are beautiful at any time of the year, but not as much as in the fall. Therefore, to pick up the moment and use the correct camera settings to create a unique autumn photo is a matter of patience and planning.
  • It is necessary to observe the exposure. If the shooting is in backlight mode, you probably will need exposure compensation, so as not to spoil the photo once again.
  • It should be shot in RAW, in order to facilitate in advance to yourself the likely further changes and work on the image with the help of appropriate programs.

Photographer: Anna Makeicheva.

  • The “Landscape” mode (you can read about it here) is ideal for ordinary digital cameras, as it emphasizes colors and tries to give the surrounding nature a maximum natural look in the photo.
  • After finding a place suitable for a photoset, it is imperative to take care of the lighting. Of course, there is no need to drag a bunch of lighting equipment and a mountain of flashlights to the place of the intended shooting. But podgadat what time of day and in what weather lighting will be best - it is quite possible. In addition, you should not be afraid of bad weather - the photos of the autumn rain fascinate no less. If you are able to catch a zipper, then make it the main character in the photo.
  • Protect the lens from direct exposure to excessive light - this will help to achieve maximum depth of field and smooth contrast. The polarization filter will help combat the glare on objects and water.

Here, in general, and all the answers to the question " how to photograph in the fall?". Successes to you in this matter! I would be very happy if you in the comments share your experience or just an opinion on the written information.

Infinitely beautiful, bright and colorful season. As the sun rises over the horizon, as nature blooms with all the colors of the rainbow, the earth is covered with fallen, but such beautiful leaves, a slight haze disappears over the horizon, an atmosphere of warmth and romance reigns in the air, and at this moment people with large backpacks and tripods begin to appear on the street and long lenses, followed by beautiful girls in felt hats, colorful scarves and an armful of yellow foliage.

These are photographers and their models, who are well aware that autumn is the best time for a unique, atmospheric and romantic photo shoot. And even if your model did not have time to pose to you today, this is not a reason to despair, because nature in the fall is very expressive and all that remains for the photographer is to take a suitable lens with you, think about the composition and advantageous angles for shooting and just capture what nature has created. Adding a modicum of your personality, of course. How to do it? This is about our conversation!

Nature photography

Equipment. How to photograph in the fall

Autumn is the time of year at which you can shoot with absolutely any technique, without fear of getting a bad shot, because it is of paramount importance
the transfer of atmosphericity, mood and warmth of colors, and, paradoxically, as it is, the simpler your technical means, the more authentic the picture looks. Here is an autumn paradox! Therefore, do not dwell on ultra-sharp lenses, expensive cameras and additional photo accessories at first. The camera, the desire and the right attitude - this is what you will need for successful photos.

Summing up this small technical block, I would like to highlight a few things:

  • Do not worry if you do not have enough money to buy some kind of lens - I am sure there is a place in every city where you can rent photographic equipment. It is much cheaper and faster than saving for a long time and nothing
take off. Learn about these places!
  • Even if you have just a soap dish, but there is a great desire to remove something - this is already half the battle, believe me! None of the most expensive appliances
will help you get a beautiful and memorable photo, if you do not want to get it. Always remember that technology is only an intermediary.
between your thoughts and the final image. Photos taken on a smartphone sometimes look much more attractive for the simple reason that
the people who made them concentrated not on the technique, but on their feelings — beauty, aesthetics, world view, and mood. Mood is the main pledge
successful photography. Watch good movies, listen to music, read books and go to shoot. All this will give you a huge energy charge.

The specificity of autumn nature photography

Shooting at each time of the year has its own nuances. Moreover, the shooting in each specific month (September, October, November) has its details, because
nature is constantly changing, and therefore requires an almost individual approach to shooting each month. And besides technical
features there are still features graphic and compositional. That, how and why it is worth shooting every month we will talk in more detail
  Further.

September. Color and light in the photo.

September is the period when the sun becomes less active compared to summer, the daylight becomes shorter, the leaves begin to turn yellow and slowly fall from the trees. In other words, this is a great time to focus on the light and color in photography; the light breaking through the branches of trees in parks and forests and creating an amazing depth of space, and the color of autumn - leaves of various shades, beautifully contrasting on the ground and in reservoirs.

So, what should focus on:

  • experiment with filters that give a warm tint to the foliage and photos in general, or focus on creative filters (see the “Technique” block), which will allow you to get an unusual image.
  • open spaces in the forest make it possible to place the shadows in the foreground and include trees with sparkling foliage, illuminated with a backlight - use this as a composite element of the photograph (to be more precise, this technique is called “reverse perspective”).
  • notice the small details — fill the foreground of the photo with autumn leaves to give it more depth and expressiveness. This will help you wide-angle lenses and lower angle shooting.
  • look for reservoirs, river beds and streams - such views will help you to make extremely poetic and nostalgic photos. Fallen leaves on the background of greenery, water and stones will stand out, and the flowing water when shooting with a long exposure (from 1 s) will be blurred and very attractive in the picture.
  • long exposure will be useful not only when shooting ponds - remove the foliage falling from the trees, the light coming through the branches, people passing by, etc. Long exposure not only helps to focus on the movement in the frame, but also make the colors more saturated and attractive.
  • It happens that the fallen leaves in the foreground creates excessive diversity and makes the frame very bright, and this can worsen the transmission of the depth of space. This can be avoided if you frame the frame so that the foreground is in the shade.
  • Choose scenes with contrasting colors. Yellow leaves on a blue sky, red leaves on a mossy, dark green surface.
  • Pay attention to ripe fruit in the trees. They can be a good subject. In other words - look for an invoice.
  • Remember about lighting. Notice at what time the terrain you are photographing is lighted up the best and use this particular time for shooting!
  • It is not necessary to go to some distant places to make a beautiful photo. Sometimes interesting stories await us in the yard. For example, taking a close-up tree silhouette and placing a twig with yellowed leaves in the center of the frame, you can express the feeling of “little autumn”.
  • Experiment with long exposure times. The dim light of the autumn day makes it necessary to increase the length of exposure, and this can be used as a wonderful artistic device. The easiest way to take abstract photos is to move the camera while exposing the frame. In other words, move the camera up and down with a shutter speed of, say, 1/8 s. Perhaps, from the first time you will not get an attractive photo, but by finding the appropriate place (a lot of leaves; light coming through the branches; a cyclist in the park, etc.), you can go for it in your head!
  • Another way is to use zoom while shooting. Those. simultaneously press the shutter button and zoom the lens.
  • In the end, a strong defocus is also an excellent artistic technique!
  • Shoot only the reflection in the water, not including in the frame anything extra. It’s best to do it again on a long exposure.
  • White balance will help you also feel like a real artist with a camera - change it as you like. Abstraction is now in fashion.
  • When shooting in backlight, work with short exposures - try to capture the rays of light.

October. Graphics and photo tonality

October - “naked” time. The trees are already standing without foliage, the weather is getting colder, the September “paints” are slowly disappearing, the light is becoming dim and less expressive. It would seem that here you can shoot? Postpone the camera and wait for more suitable weather? Not! It's only the beginning!

  • This month is perfect for working out the composition! It's time to recall the linear perspective. Large
value is acquired by compositional constructions, location in the frame of trunks and branches of trees, tonal correlations of plot elements.
Deep subjects in the foreground contribute to the deep perception of the plot. You can emphasize the perspective by including the line of the road, the path,
extending from the edge of the frame into the distance.
  • The lack of foliage on the trees contributes to a wider opening of the space. The landscape at this time gets graphic, and diffused lighting does not allow to accurately determine the volume of objects, which requires special attention to work with the tone in the photo.
  • Winning will look, for example, alley, leaving into the distance. Classics of the genre. 🙂
  • It's time to remember a black and white photo. Put on the camera mode "B & W" and focus on shooting lines and stripes. They can be anything they want - a road, an alley, a bench, a tree branch, a fence, a strip on the wall of a house, etc. Just set a goal to search for only stripes in the frame and you will be surprised how many are in the surrounding space.
  • Another creative task - remove a series of photos called "Circle". No matter what it will be: a bunch of leaves in the shape of a circle, a dog
in the park, curled up, a balloon stuck in the branches of trees, or a bend in the shape of a circle. The main thing is that the series combines one subject (one form in this case).
  • The continuation of this topic - shooting typography. In other words, the letters for a word, the outlines of which can be found in the surrounding space. The bend of the branches in the shape of the letter “o”, the hunchbacked person on the other side of the road in the shape of the letter “g”, two neighboring houses in the shape of the letter “n” and someone's belt on the asphalt in the shape of the letter “i” - putting four pictures together, we get the word "lights". The most it is for black and white photography.
  • Despite the black and white shooting, color filters are still relevant. When shooting in cloudy weather, color filters are used to separate the individual elements of the plot that have differences in color.
  • Very atmospheric look frames in the style of "sepia". This mode can also be enabled in the camera settings.
  • Do not forget about the individual images of the sky and clouds in particular. With a strong wind, the clouds do not stay for long, constantly changing their shape and position. Be attentive and look for the outlines of familiar shapes in the sky - geometrical figures or some abstractions. But do not hesitate, otherwise you can miss the unique moment.
  • This month, by the way, will be creative filters (see paragraph “Technique”). Use them not only to convey the mood of the photos, but also when working on a composition.
  • It's time to recall the "noise" in the picture. Now they are more suitable than ever, and, in my opinion, they will be an excellent artistic addition to photography. “Crank up” the ISO and shoot it boldly - this time it's a completely justified decision!

November. Rain as an element of mood and expressiveness

Well, here it is the rainy, cold and chilly time - November. It's time to remember how to save the camera in the rain, which
artistic and compositional elements are relevant this month and think about shooting still life.

  • First of all, speaking at a photo session in rainy weather, you should stock up with plastic bags and more. They will help you to protect from moisture not only the backpack, but also the equipment itself, even in the heaviest rain.
  • Another protection option is a cellophane raincoat that weighs a little and will easily cover you and your equipment from precipitation.
  • Another democratic option is an umbrella. An indispensable companion in the fall! It will be useful if the camera is on your tripod. Otherwise, you may not have enough hands.
  • The most advanced option - box for underwater shooting. Somewhat more expensive than the previous options, but very practical! With it, you will feel like a fish in water.
  • This month, a tripod will be your most important assistant, because adjusting the exposure with one hand and holding the umbrella or a plastic bag for the camera with the other is not always convenient. Do not neglect them!
  • If you use a light tripod (up to 2.5 kg), then try to hold it when shooting - with a strong wind it can simply blow off. Some tripods have a bottom hook for which you can hang a weighting agent - for example, a camera case.
  • It is highly recommended to use filters to protect the lens from moisture (even the simplest UV filters will do).
  • In addition, use more and hood - protects the lens from rain drops even in wind gusts.
  • But what to do if you do not have a box for underwater shooting, no packages for a camera or a tripod, but there is an endless desire to shoot? There is a solution - the use of disposable waterproof cameras. This is the most budget way to shoot in the fall in any weather.
  • What exposure to use when shooting? It all depends on the artistic component of the picture. For example, do you want rain to be seen or not? Even with a small rain it can be made so that the drops will be visible (sharp) or the downpour will look blurry, more like a translucent curtain. In other words, a shutter speed of 1/250 sec will “freeze” raindrops, and it will be sharp. Exposures longer than 1/250 will blur drops.
  • Regarding the camera settings - try to shoot at long exposures. First, this is due to poor lighting. Secondly, the constant rain and damp. With a long exposure time frames will have a more poetic look.
  • It often happens that due to cloudy weather, the pictures are gray, uniform in illumination. It is possible to increase the brightness of such photos if there are glare surfaces in the frame, for example, puddles or very dark objects.
  • If you want to get sharp photos, be careful with telephoto lenses - because of the water vapor in the air between the subject and the camera, the pictures can be obtained with reduced contrast and look like they are veiled. For sharp photos, use wide-angle and normal lenses. But this blur effect can serve as an excellent artistic device.
  • Pay attention to the fact that most of the objects after the rain are wet. Water, falling into bends, glitters and reflects light
  • This can be beaten in photography, because the light reflected from the water, whether it be the sun, lights or a halo from the lamps of the city lighting, adds volume to the photo.
  • It is not always necessary to be in the rain to remove the rain. Find an open place under a canopy and remove from there. So you have
there will be a soft diffused light that will help work out the details in the shadows, you will not have dark photographs.
  • Be sure to use the time immediately after the rain. The air at this time is characterized by amazing transparency that will be transferred to your photos.
  • Take pictures of people who are in a hurry because of the rain on long exposures - so you can add an element of impressionism to your photos.
  • Have you ever tried to take a picture of a zipper? Not? In the rain it is easier to make it - put the camera on a tripod, choose a view that captures a portion of the sky and the intended place of the lightning, close the aperture as close as possible, put the longest shutter speed (you may need to use bulb mode) and brew hot tea for yourself. It remains only to wait until lightning appears in the sky. But remember - it is not necessary to press the shutter release not during the appearance of the lightning itself, but somewhat earlier.
  • If you want to enhance the feeling of rain in the photos, shoot with a flash. The light passing through raindrops is brighter than anything else. Use this as a compositional technique.
  • In any case, when shooting in the rain, remember a simple rule - the smaller the objects in the picture, the more they attract attention. Do not include too many objects in the frame - strive for simplicity. It is not so easy as it seems at first glance. 🙂

Photography techniques

  1. Using a polarizing filter will provide bright, rich photos of leaves.
  2. Shadows arising from angular lighting will allow you to create the maximum amount of images.
  3. Shooting in backlight will create the effect of the glow of the leaves.
  4. If you are shooting a landscape, the recommended aperture values \u200b\u200bare f5.6 - 12.
  5. If you use the metering mode, then do not put it "on the dot", because the frame will be overexposed.
  6. Do not overdo it with a saturation of photos! The "acid-bright" colors will make the romantic atmosphere of autumn somewhat vulgar.
  7. Watch the exposure. If you are shooting in backlight (for example, foliage, sun canopy trees), you will most likely have to introduce an exposure correction - by about +1 or even +2 steps.
  8. Put the white balance on your camera in "cloudy" or "shadow." This will make the colors warmer.
  9. "Registered time" as important as ever! Do not miss it, the light day is very short, and the sunrise and sunset hours are incredibly attractive at this time of year and the rising and setting sun will very well accentuate the colors of autumn.
  10. If the camera supports different jpeg modes, try setting “landscape” or “bright”. In other words, try using a mode that increases color saturation.

Photo composition. From simple to complex.

Undoubtedly, nature is beautiful in itself, and no matter how we take pictures of it, the picture will look beautiful; but there is a certain set of compositional techniques, using which, one can noticeably more advantageously show what surrounds us. This is not an iron set of rules, but only recommendations and ideas, following (or breaking) that you can add a little personality to each photo. And sometimes this is precisely what many landscape photographs lack - the author's vision, and not the documentary reproduction of what he saw.

  • When choosing a composition for the landscape, try to create a “visual journey” for the viewer. To interesting objects were in the near, middle and background.
  • For maximum effect from using shadow composition as an element, make a small negative exposure compensation.
  • If you are shooting a pond, on the surface of which there are lily pads, depending on what you focus on: on lilies or reflection of autumn leaves, the impression changes dramatically - pictures with a focus on water lilies look more natural, but it all depends on your ideas.
  • The easiest way to convey the mood of autumn - shooting on a rainy day.
  • Include long shadows in the frame, which will help give the pictures a feeling of greater depth and bulk.
  • When shooting leaves on trees, it is recommended to stand under them towards the lighting.
  • Even familiar objects, such as, for example, a stack of firewood under a tree, are able to convey the unique sensations of autumn — light sadness, wilt and nostalgia.

Gallery of photos and explanations to them:

Photo 1: The photo is built on contrasts - the painted flowers on the wall are contrasted with yellow, dried leaves on the ground. The lower angle of shooting, in which the frame does not get anything extra except the picture and leaves, reinforces the impression of opposition.

Photo 2: A photo that has absorbed not only the personification of autumn - the ground covered with white cloth, yellow leaves, bare trees - but also some kind of social subtext of the “Russian person” - birch trees; windows hung with a cloth. And of course, the combination of colors in the frame — green curtains, a yellow strip on the facade of the house, yellow leaves, red brick — plays a role.

Photo 3: Another metaphor and opposition - live / dead, blooming / withered, young / old. And all this against the background of monotonous city windows.

Each season is beautiful in its own way. Autumn is best liked by photographers because of its colorful and bright colors. In order to preserve the look of beautiful autumn days, you need to know how to photograph autumn landscapes correctly. Having mastered some rules, you can get great shots without having professional equipment.

1. The shooting time at which you can get the most interesting pictures in the autumn is the hour of dawn and the setting time of sunset. This time will have a special color. The low position of the sun creates backlight, which makes the whole autumn world surprisingly light and transparent.

2. Constantly need to monitor exposure. Backlighting may require introducing exposure compensation by one or two steps.

3. If you are shooting not in RAW, then the white balance is better to set to "cloudy" or "shadow." Pictures will be warmer and softer. When photographing in RAW format, white balance can be easily adjusted during conversion on a computer.

4. When photographing with automatic settings, it is best to set the programmed mode that fits to the specific shooting conditions. For autumn landscapes, the “Landscape” mode is best suited. In this mode, the colors will be more juicy and natural.

5. Having learned to photograph autumn, you can create pictures that will convey a different mood. Autumn is a time for bright colors and the dying of nature. What is the meaning of your pictures will be up to you.

6. In the autumn a lot of contrasting colors. It is very important to learn how to use it. For example, yellow leaves will look very interesting against a background of red and green or against a blue sky.

7. Photos from a low point in the autumn look especially attractive. If the frame gets a mushroom or a pile of leaves, it will create an indescribable mood.

8. Ripened fruits will look colorful and lively on the trees. Especially interesting is the type of fruit in the trees with fallen leaves.

9. It is very subtle to convey the autumn mood, photographing reflections in a pond, puddles or artificial reservoirs.

10. The most incredible autumn landscapes can be found in parks and squares. They must be visited in search of stories.

11. You should always follow the lighting. If you find a great place to take a picture, and the light does not allow you to take a good shot, then you can always return to more sunny weather. However, you need to try to take a picture immediately. In cloudy weather, sometimes the most indescribably beautiful pictures are obtained.

12. You can take original photos by taking a few leaves home and gluing them to the window glass. The sun will begin to shine through its leaves, and they can be photographed close-up in macro mode.

13. Undoubtedly, leaves, thrown up, are a hit of the autumn photo. To avoid blurring, you need to use a slow shutter speed, about 1/500 of a second, or sport mode.

14. The hood will help get rid of glare and glare, which will give the flowers even greater saturation. When photographing autumn landscapes, it is not necessary to increase the sensitivity of the matrix above 200 ISO. Also, when shooting, you can use a polarizing filter.

15. If you are photographing a person against the backdrop of autumn nature, make sure that the color of the clothes is in harmony with the colors of autumn and does not stand out from the overall picture.

We had a very warm and dry autumn this year. At least, this was September and early October. And just now in the last week of October, the leaves finally turned yellow.

And I decided that it was time to write some tips on how to photograph the very golden autumn. It is very important for Scrapbookers to have good photography skills.. After all, the main element of the page scrap is the picture.

1. In motion
An integral element of autumn - the game with leaves. With this shooting - shooting objects in motion, it is necessary to switch on the camera in shutter priority mode   (S, T, Tv - in different chambers is indicated differently). In this mode, you can choose how long the shutter will open. When we do not take pictures, the shutter is closed. When we take a picture, the shutter opens so that the film (in film cameras) or the matrix (in digital cameras) can receive the image from the lens.

The time interval while the shutter is open and there is a shutter speed.   Typically, the shutter speed is indicated in fractions of a second, for example, one tenth of a second (1/10), or seconds, which are written like this - 2 "". In my Canon EOS 450D, the maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds and the minimum is 1/4000.
These photographs were taken with a shutter speed of 1/200 in Burst mode. Burst shooting is a mode in which the camera takes not a single frame, but a whole series of frames with the press of the shutter button.

Puddle-jumping kids are also a great example of shooting in exposure priority mode. Splashing around rubber boots seems to freeze. In the same mode, rain is removed if they want to capture the falling droplets.

2. Details
Autumn is famous for its rich colors. Do not forget to photograph the details: leaves underfoot, mushrooms in a basket, a handful of acorns.

For shooting details, I switch to aperture priority mode (A or Av). As i have wrote in her blog In the same mode, I also take close-ups of my scrapbook or postcards. As they say, in order not to show "on fingers", I made a scrapbook book with examples.

Photographing the details, do not forget about the legs, or rather rubber boots. Especially children, because they change every year.

3. "Golden watch"
No, I'm not talking about a gold watch. I’m about gold watches in photography when the lighting becomes soft and diffused. Adored being professional photographers. Golden hours are considered the first hour after sunrise and the last hour before sunset.   You can shoot at this time not only landscapes and streets, but also portraits, objects, flowers.

Landscapes shot in the golden hours are warm and contrasting, magical. For street portrait shooting the gold watch is the most suitable. The sun is low above the earth, illuminating the face from the side, not from above. We do not have harsh, harsh shadows on our faces under our nose and eyes, we do not squint.

When photographing in the forest and parks watch the position of the sun.   To get a beautiful volumetric frame, the light must fall from the side or in the opposite direction, but not because of your back.

4. Shooting angle
Shooting from a low point at ground level allows us to “snatch” small objects, to show their volume, which is not visible when shooting from above.

And you can do the opposite - to be above the subject. Thus, we can, for example, seize the yellow leaves on the grass.

5. Create a composition by yourself.
Do not be afraid to create a composition of natural material, as well as thematic objects that can help highlight the mood in the photo. I took this picture at home on my return from the street. It turned out a beautiful autumn snapshot, which can be scribbled in a page and used in your pocket album (Project Life).

And these two photos were taken on the street. I laid out the composition of leaflets and nuts myself, leaf by leaf. Although it looks as if the wind did all the work for me.

Here I have added old books in a yellow cover - old books with faded edges and brown specks, like fallen leaves themselves.

Learn to take pictures, do not be afraid to experiment. And shoot, shoot, shoot! To get one frame that I like, I usually make up to 50 frames, changing the angle, rearranging-removing-adding objects into the composition that I photograph.

One of the available ways to learn how to make a beautiful composition is to learn from the work of professionals. I love the work of Irina Blueberry. Her photos are always "personalized", sincere, you can easily paint still lifes from them. Be sure to look to Irina in
